not a prison

not a prison by Digital Witness
not a prison, a photo by Digital Witness on Flickr.

if it’s not a prison:

why the wires

that are barbed

on naked rooftops

cowered over humble dwellings

bars before the windows

souls of men and women

locked inside

why do people walk

with momentary glances

exchanging distance

nothing personal

never smiling

on city streets

a lonely hour long

a nervous minute wide

why the faded sunrise

that barely breaks the houstops

to meet you in the morning

with greetings never louder

than a long drawn out sigh

would not be a prison

but for the people

locked inside
